Biodiesel

Fetty acid methylester (better known as "Biodiesel" - according to standard EU Nr. 2003/30/EC dated 8. Mai 2003 about the facilitation of utilisation of bio fuel and the source renewable energy for the transport for the production of fuels) are the basis for this fuel. 100 - per pence fatty acid methylester can also be used as fuel.

The quality of the produced biodiesel corresponds to the European Norm EN 14214 and depending on the raw materials used, it is called:

FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) – Biodiesel made of a raw material mix e.g. of fresh rapeseed oil and used cooking oil - or rapeseed oil and soy bean oil;

RME (Rapeseed Methyl Ester) - Biodiesel made of fresh rapeseed oil;

AME (Acid Methyl Ester) - Biodiesel only made of used cooking oil;

SME (Soya Methyl Ester) - Biodiesel made of fresh soy bean oil;

PME (Palm Methyl Ester) - Biodiesel made of palm oil.

On 31. August 1937 the belgian  G. Chavanne registered at the free university of Brussels a patent for transesterification of vegetable oils through Ethanol (Methanol has also been mentionend), to use their quality characteristics to improve the use of their nature as fuel for engines (belgian patent 422,877).

Since that time we know about reasearches in the field of biodieselproduction. Biodiesel is as per his application herbal fuel and is corresponding with diesel oil. Compared to conventional diesel oil, biodiesel is not made from crude oil, but of vegetable oil, animal fat oder used cooking oil. Therefore we call biodiesel a newewable source.

Biodiesel is nowadays generally known as fuel of the future. Because of the worldwide shortage of crude oil resources and as a result of that the steadily increasing oil prices, the biodiesel industry experiences a boom.

As raw material the biodiesel industry is using usually herbal oils, such as rapeseed oil. Since the prices of rapeseed oil and other herbal oils are rising frequantly with all time highs, used cooking oil is the most favourable feedstock substitute and a demanded feedstock in the market.

Biodiesel offers considerable advantages:

Since biodiesel is being manufacturer of renewable raw materials, it replaces the use of fuel made of fossil oil, which future availability is already considered as limited. During the  production of biodiesel out of oil plants no waste products are being produced, because all side products of this reaction can be utilized: colza cake and soya cake, which incurre during pressing, are used as animal feed. The glycerine, which is the outcome of the transesterification can be u industry (for example for cosmetics). The straw which remains on the fields is conducive to the soil fertility, because the humus remains sustained.

In case of leckages biodiesel is less harmful to the environment than conventional diesel. Conventional diesel belongs to water pollution class 2 (harmful to water), biodiesel belongs to water pollutin class (slightly harmful to water). Pure plant oil is not harmful to water at all.

The dependency of imports is less problematic with biodiesel than with mineral oil, since the rawmaterial  plant oil can be manufactured in many coutries wordwide and the industry is not reliant on deliveries of mineral oil from political turbulent regions.
